I was thinking to increase prices for my own courses and workshops that I conduct.

And this article came in at the right time with the right attitude and action steps.

I really loved this line – “If you deliver a good product and offer value then there’s zero reason you should be sorry about it.” – It’s so true.

I love how you guys are being honest with your opinions.

I have to say I take a slightly different view from you. My target market is exactly the small enterprises you discuss in your blog post. I’d agree that smaller companies don’t have massive budgets to hire expert firms, but I would argue that I provide a great service to those companies.

Here’s what sets me apart from the cheaper web designers you discuss in your post. First, I use Wix, not WordPress. Yes, it’s a WISIWYG editor, and yes, the client could do it themselves. BUT what they can’t neccessarily do is create a functional design and back it up with SEO. They can’t learn how to use the editor in five minutes. They are not sure about branding and layout and white space. In fact they have better things to do with their time.

So, like you guys, I have a conversation with my clients. I onboard them with an intake form. I supply checklists to them for their content and even help them write it. I continue to have conversations with them and hold their hand throughout the build. In fact I maybe spend a little more time than I should.

I listen to their goals and objectives and deliver a great looking website. At the end of the build I hand their Wix account over to them with a tutorial session on how to use the editor / upload a blog post / whatever else they need. So now they have invested some time and a small amount of money but they get full control over a great looking functional website that they now own AND know how to use, and I get some business.

My approach has all the benefits of them having built a website themselves, but with a better end result overall – for me and them.

I now have your 90 day workbook which I too will use in conjunction with Janet’s to plan my bigger meatier content based on the planning I’ve done in Janet’s diary.

I love the quality of the paper etc in Janet’s and I’ve geeked out and added little index tabs for all the months and the planning area and I’ve done the same for hours now I’ve printed it off. 🙂 Janets is done on delicious thick quality paper that doesn’t bleed through and I treated yours to 100gsm paper. #stationery geek

I have been wrestling with my website and trying to decide how best to go about it. I would love to hire you to do mine but that’s not in my budget at the moment.

So, I have been plodding on doing it myself on WP but keep wondering about the other ways it could be done. Your recommendation of carrying on with WP and learning as I go helps me feel that I made the right decision and can stop thinking about the other options.

I’ve implemented lots of your suggested changes already including a new layout on my home page, making it easier for visitors to get to where they need to be quickly. My organic search traffic has also more than doubled to over 60%.

I think it’s best to work with a platform that suits you. I know a lot of people use Cornerstone, Visual Composer etc because they find the standard WordPress editor restrictive.

This is the main reason I wrote this post, to make people aware that it is possible to produce attractive blog posts without knowing code of needing additional software.

Using the the WP editor and TinyMCE also makes it easier if you change themes in the future and cornerstone isn’t an option.

Couldn’t agree more. Hopefully it will comes as default in the WordPress updates to come. Fingers crossed.

But I agree, that the Tiny MCE plugin is so useful. It should be a default in the editor as it makes lives so much easier and your content so much better.

I’ve been using Cornerstone for my blogs recently as it came with the theme and visually I find it far easier to see and work with than using the WP editor. Is there anything else I need to watch out for apart from it possibly affecting load times?

A few points of comment:

Good point about keeping the text colour dark in relation to the background. The only issue I have using the text colour picker for this is that It’s easy for the user to act like a kid in a sweetie shop and introduce colours that are off-brand. This could look jarring on the published page.

There’s the same danger with changing the font. I don’t think Comic Sans has a place in that dropdown menu!

The text sizer in Advanced TinyMCE actually measures in point size, which is a measure for print rather than pixels for web. You’re using 2rem or 20px – not 20pt.

There is a way to change the unit type from pt to px – see my post.

You broke your own rule on links: “I always try to hyperlink a related word” with “this plugin”. 🙂

You can simply embed the video URL in WordPress rather than using the iframe, unless you have embeds disabled.

I’m going to be really picky about your use of a table for the coloured box. It’s not the right markup – it should really be a with a class. Here’s an alternative way of doing that: https://wpsites.net/wordpress-themes/colored-buttons-content-boxes/
